James L. Khatcheressian, MD
Patient Care Philosophy:
Patients should be partners in their care and are encouraged to bring all of their questions (and questions from loved ones) to every visit.
Known to his patients as “Dr. K,” Dr. Khatcheressian is an accomplished, board-certified oncologist with a reputation for making patients feel comfortable, informed and optimistic. His beliefs that “[p]atients should be partners in their care” and that the informed choices are “an integral part of the treatment process” are the hallmarks of his treatment philosophy.
Graduating magna cum laude from the George Washington University in Washington, DC—Dr. Khatcheressian’s hometown—in 1993, he moved a few hours south to receive his MD from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 1998. He remained at VCU Medical Center to complete both a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in medical oncology. In addition to his services as a physician, Dr. Khatcheressian serves as the medical director of research at VCI. In this, he oversees the largest private cancer research center in Central Virginia, ensuring that patients receive the best, leading-edge cancer treatments available.
His involvement in a variety of national professional associations includes authorship of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s 2006 “Update of the Breast Cancer Follow-Up and Management Guidelines in the Adjuvant Setting,” work with the American Cancer Society to develop standard guidelines for breast cancer rehabilitation, and membership in the steering committee for The Lance Armstrong Foundation to develop nationwide cancer survivorship programs. Additionally, he serves as the medical director of a nationally accredited breast cancer multidisciplinary clinic at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. Dr. Khatcheressian is an avid painter; you can find some of his work displayed in his office. He’s also known to play some smooth blues and jazz guitar.
