Virginia Cancer Institute is dedicated to helping our patients understand their consumer rights so they can focus on what’s most important—their care and healing journey.
Federal and state laws provide important protections to help prevent receiving surprise (also called balance) billing. Under the No Surprises Act, privately-insured patients are protected from surprise billing when they receive emergency care or certain services from an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility. In these situations, you cannot be charged more than your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amounts, such as your copayment, coinsurance, or deductible. These protections help ensure that unexpected providers involved in your care—such as anesthesiologists, radiologists, or other specialists—cannot send you additional bills for the difference between what your insurance pays and the full cost of the service. For uninsured and self-pay patients, it means you will receive a good faith estimate before your treatment so you can decide whether you want to proceed before any services are provided. They also provide more opportunities to dispute bills that do not match a good faith estimate.
