Nishanth Sukumaran, MD

Dr. Sukumaran is a strong advocate of the patient-first philosophy and puts it into practice each day. Dr. Sukumaran understands that every cancer patient’s journey is unique, and he takes the time to listen to their concerns and involve them in every step of their treatment. He uses his years of experience to develop the most effective, evidence-based care, and he guides his patients with compassion.
Dr. Sukumaran earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from Kottayam Medical College, Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam, India, and is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Queen’s Hospital in the United Kingdom, and continued his training at Lankenau Medical Center in Philadelphia, where he earned a fellowship in hematology and oncology.
Dr. Sukumaran is dedicated to staying up to date on the latest information on the prevention, detection and treatment of various cancers and has a special interest in the management of solid tumors and targeted therapies. He is an active member of the American Society of Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
Dr. Sukumaran joined Virginia Cancer Institute in August 2016 and receives patients at our Bon Secour @ Southside Medical Center and Puddledock locations.
When Dr. Sukumaran isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his family and can often be found on the tennis court.
