Patient Care Philosophy:
I believe that knowledge is power. By taking the time to explain each diagnosis, treatment option, and next step, I strive to help patients feel confident, involved, and supported in every decision about their care.

Heather Lewis is a board-certified family nurse practitioner who brings extensive experience in critical care, palliative medicine, and complex disease management to Virginia Cancer Institute’s Johnston-Willis team. She is passionate about helping patients and their families navigate the challenges of a cancer diagnosis with compassion, honesty, and clear communication. Heather believes that knowledge empowers patients, and she is committed to ensuring every individual understands their diagnosis, treatment options, and goals of care so they can make informed decisions with confidence.

Before joining Virginia Cancer Institute, Heather served as a palliative care nurse practitioner with Crater Community Hospice, where she facilitated goals-of-care discussions, managed complex symptoms, and partnered with interdisciplinary teams to provide personalized care for patients with serious illnesses. She previously practiced at VCU Health’s Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Disease and Metabolic Health, caring for patients with chronic liver disease while mentoring nurse practitioner students and newly hired providers. Earlier in her career, Heather spent several years in the Medical-Respiratory Intensive Care Unit at VCU Health, caring for critically ill patients and serving in both clinical leadership and education roles during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Heather earned both her Master of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University after completing a bachelor’s degree in biology at James Madison University. Her clinical interests include palliative care and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, where she is dedicated to improving quality of life through thoughtful symptom management, compassionate support, and evidence-based care. She is board-certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and has been recognized with the AASLD Emerging Liver Advanced Practice Provider Award as well as multiple DAISY Award nominations for excellence in patient care. 

Outside of the office, Heather enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and two daughters, exploring Richmond’s food and brewery scene, and listening to music.
