What Patients say about Dr. Schunn:
Dr. Schunn was recommended by multiple physicians and turned out to be an excellent coach, friend, and advisor during my illness.~
With her connections to European cancer centers and societies, Dr. Schunn brings international experience and knowledge to Virginia Cancer Institute. Her passion for patient care began with a degree in nursing from the College of Nursing in Munich, Germany, after which she worked in the Anesthesiological/ Interdisciplinary Intensive Care Unit of the University of Munich Hospital.
Dr. Schunn later studied at Ludwig-Maximilians University Medical School in Munich, Germany, where she received her MD and spent extended time in research. In the States, she completed residencies in internal medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania and in hematology/ oncology at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. She is board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine and has been a physician with Virginia Cancer Institute since 2006.
Her treatment philosophy is centered on compassion and individualizing treatment for each and every patient. Dr. Schunn’s availability to her patients, her honest and open communication, and her commitment to follow and keep up with the best current options are hallmarks of her treatment strategy praised by patients. Her clinical and research interests range from thoracic, breast, and hematological malignancies to clinical trials and new drug development and applications.
Outside the office, Dr. Schunn’s interests include architectural preservation—making Richmond a great place to call home—concert-level piano and gardening. She lives in Midlothian and sees patients at our Johnston-Willis and Hull Street locations.
